In another indication that Colorado’s Niobrara is attracting global interest, London-based Nighthawk is increasing its focus in U.S. shale plays with the announcement that it is acquiring an additional 25% interest in the Jolly Ranch project
in the DJ Basin. The seller is Running Foxes Petroleum.

TABOR Hampers Colorado Education

Partly because of TABOR, Colorado schools rank 40th in spending per pupil and 48th in percentage of income applied to education spending according to a 2007 study by the US Census Bureau. Colorado’s future job market is dependent on well-educated workers that are highly skilled in math and science. Renewable energy manufacturing and design, aerospace technology and computer sciences have a strong presence in Colorado, but if newer generations are not well-educated, the jobs will disappear to other markets that have a better supply of well-educated applicants.

Marathon Sells $270M Stake in Niobrara to Japanese Firm

The deal calls for Marubeni to get a 30 percent stake in Marathon’s 180,000 acres in the DJ Basin of Colorado and Wyoming. The Houston-based company is already conducting seismic testing of its acreage and expects to start eight to 12 exploratory wells by the end of this year.
