Western Utilities Aim For Increased Efficiency

Colorado illustrates changed thinking in the West, where utilities in recent years have started tackling energy efficiency with as much vigor as they once reserved for building new power plants. If Xcel can meet the PUC specifications, the state will shave electrical use by four billion kilowatt hours per year in 2020.

“We commend Commissioners for ensuring Xcel Energy will go the extra mile to help its customers cut energy waste and use electricity more efficiently,” says Howard Geller of the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project. “There’s no good reason for Xcel customers to be paying higher electricity bills than necessary.”

Energy Efficiency Upgrades = More Colorado Jobs

Increasing the efficiency of electricity, natural gas, and gasoline use would lead to a net increase of 4,660 jobs in Colorado by 2015 and 11,600 jobs by 2025, according to the new study from the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project.
