Seventeen Percent of Xcel’s Electricity From Wind, But Future Cloudy
The future of wind power in Colorado is uncertain because although the Fiscal Cliff deal extended the Production Tax Credit for 2013 projects, Xcel Energy recently noted that it has all the renewable energy it needs to meet state requirements.

The utility says the move will be a hedge against natural gas price fluctuations. The charge for the electricity from the Limon facility will start at $27.50 per megawatt-hour. Xcel’s average purchase cost for wind since 2007 has been $42.16.

The Limon Wind Energy Center will be home to 125 turbines and related equipment in Lincoln and Elbert counties, plus a buffer zone surrounding it. All told, 35,000 acres will be involved. Xcel did not disclose the cost of the wind farm but said the price was nearly 40 percent lower than bids offered in the earlier round.
