DOE, NREL “Go Big” with 1.5-MW R&D Turbine
The large-scale wind turbine, the first unit fully owned by DOE, will serve as a platform for research projects aimed at improving the performance of wind technology and lowering the costs of wind energy. Blades of the General Electric 1.5 MW turbine are being stored outside on cradles this winter at the National Wind Technology Center. They are secured with large concrete blocks to prevent them from being damaged during high winds and storms.
