Encana Slams EPA Over ‘Not Factual’ Pavillion, WY, Water Draft Report
In a detailed press release to media, the energy company noted that many of the agency’s findings from its recent deep monitoring wells, including those related to any potential connection between fracking and Pavillion groundwater quality, “are conjecture, not factual, and only serve to trigger undue alarm.”

The finding set off calls for tighter rules on the fracking process. “This could be a game changer,” said Frank Smith, an organizer with the Western Colorado Congress, an environmental group. Not so fast said Wyoming officials, including the Governor.

“Some of [the cases] date back several years, and I don’t want to make excuses, that shouldn’t be the case,” David Neslin, executive director of the COGCC which is charged with permitting and regulating natural gas and oil drilling in Colorado. “We do need to do a better job at bringing timely enforcement matters, and we’re committed to doing so.”

The industry is particularly concerned about the EPA’s reference to a “lifecycle analysis” as part of the study. The agency has attempted a similar “lifecycle” approach to renewable fuels, with great controversy and little agreement among stakeholders as to the viability of such an analysis.
