Gunnison County Coal Mine Expansion Gets
Federal Go-Ahead
The lease for 786 acres of federal coal deposits at the Elk Creek Mine, near Somerset, was approved by the Interior Board of Land Appeals, according to a bureau release. WildEarth Guardians and the Sierra Club had challenged the BLM approval for the mind.

“This is a dirty energy disgrace,” said Jeremy Nichols, Climate and Energy Program Director for WildEarth Guardians. His heated rhetoric and that of others paid off — at least temporarily — when the BLM said last week that it would reconsider approval of the mine expansion.
