Higher Drilling Fines a Step Closer
The House Finance Committee voted 7-5 to increase the drilling fines from a maximum $1,000 a day to a maximum $15,000 a day. The Democratic sponsor of the fine hike says Colorado’s 1955 fine schedule leaves the state far behind fellow energy-producing states.

Nor do we necessarily consider all such initiatives misguided. Energy development can involve noise, traffic and other activity that has an impact on a community’s quality of life. Having said that, however, we believe counties should proceed with caution.
