North Park Lease Sale Good News or a Dud — Depending on Who You Ask
The BLM’s controversial lease sale of parcels in Northern Colorado netted only two bids out of 11 total offered. About 1,470 acres of the full 11,073 up for lease in the area were bid on. Conservation, hunting and wildlife groups have strongly opposed opening the area to more drilling.

The BLM has announced it is delaying what was to be the first auction of geothermal leases in Colorado. Federal officials say they need more time to resolve questions about the potential impact of geothermal development on water and property rights.

Department officials are confident the proposed measures will reduce the risk of bad-faith bidders from interfering with auctions, still, the inspector general recommends several additional steps, including establishing a nationwide ban on persons or companies that have defaulted on repeated parcels from participating in BLM auctions.
