Group Says Deal Pending in Refuge Drilling Lawsuit

Christine Canaly of the San Luis Valley Ecosystem Council says that Toronto-based Lexam Explorations will consider selling its mineral rights in the Baca National Wildlife Refuge where it wanted to drill natural gas — provided a $9.7 million deal can be reached by May 17.

Federal Court Blocks Drilling in Baca
Wildlife Refuge

The Bush administration approved the plan, deciding that drilling and gas exploration would have no significant impact on the refuge or groundwater, and that a full environmental impact analysis was not necessary. Records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act later showed that industry officials helped draft parts of the government’s analysis.
