Obama’s Bets on Abound, SoloPower Cutting Costs to Avoid Bankruptcy
Solar energy manufacturers that received backing from the Obama administration may survive an onslaught of cheap Chinese panels that helped force Solyndra LLC into bankruptcy. Loveland-based Abound and SoloPower in California say their thin-film panels will compete on price against the most common type of solar panels.

The manufacturing giant’s connections to Colorado may bode well for locating the panel factory here. It acquired Arvada-based PrimeStar Solar Inc. to gain entry into the thin film PV market, and NREL certified that company’s panels as the most energy efficient of their kind.

DOE Closes on $400M Loan Guarantee for Abound Solar Manufacturing Project
“Size matters when building scale,” CEO Tom Tiller told Colorado Energy News. “This funding will help us grow from 30 to more than 800 megawatts in production capacity — in just three or four years.” 200 Front Range jobs are expected to be created because of the project.

Abound Solar to Expand Payroll by 300+ Jobs Thanks to $400 Million in Federal Loan Guarantee
The manufacturer of thin-film solar panels says it will add that many jobs in coming months at its Longmont production facility — nearly doubling its employee base in the state, and tripling production lines.

CSU Launches Solar R&D Center
