Colorado’s Proposed Roadless Rule Criticized
By Energy Groups
Several groups representing the interests of oil and gas companies have commented on Colorado’s proposed rule for managing roadless forests, saying that it would essentially designate more areas as wilderness.
In comments to the U.S. Forest Service last week, the Western Energy Alliance and the Colorado Oil and Gas Association joined other groups in stating that only Congress can designate wilderness that’s protected from development.
Colorado wants to carve out state-specific exceptions to a 2001 federal rule blocking most development on about 58 million acres of national forests, which would put it off limits to energy development.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who oversees the Forest Service, has said he hopes to make a final decision later this year.
