Denver-based EnerCrest Inc., has closed five regional offices and laid off about 225 workers, according to news reports.

A Pinedale, Wyoming newspaper reports that EnerCrest is scaling back its road and pipeline construction operations in energy-producing areas.

It quotes Todd Erickson, the company’s chief development officer, as saying the decision is a result of the poor economy and a struggling oil and gas industry. “It’s impacted the profitability of our operations,” Erickson told the newspaper.

The Associated Press reports that the offices closed are in Sibley, La., where some 125 workers were let go, as well as in Rifle and Greeley; Big Piney, Wyo.; and Williston, N.D.

The Roundup said the company’s product divisions in Wyoming and Montana are continuing, and quotes Erickson as saying that EnerCrest does not intend to file for bankruptcy.
