Dennis Darrow of the Pueblo Chieftain reports that a working icon to wind turbine manufacturer Vestas will soon tower above the company’s new plant off Interstate 25 south of Pueblo. Next month the  Vestas  April plans to erect a V100-1.8 MW wind turbine on site. Foundation work started about two weeks ago. The tower itself — built in four sections at the new tower plant in Pueblo — will rise 312 feet.

The blades will span 164 feet each, reaching a total sweep diameter of 328 feet. V100 refers to the blades’ total diameter: 100 meters, or about 328 feet.    The foundation will feature an approximately 8-foot-deep pad of engineered steel and concrete anchored by concrete-encased, thick iron rods that run 65 feet deep into the ground.

The raising of the tower and installing of the blades and nacelle will take place over a couple of days, likely by mid-April, executives say. A giant crane will be assembled on site to perform the work. To be easily seen from Interstate 25, the giant windmill will be a working turbine that feeds power directly into Pueblo’s electricity grid under a partnership with Black Hills Energy.

The 1.8 megawatts of power equals about 20 percent of the electricity needed by the Vestas plant, advancing both Vestas and Black Hills’ renewable energy goals.
