Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the quirky non-politician’s politician, the guy who thought about running for governor before but backed out at the very last minute, is officially in this year’s race.
Hickenlooper made his announcement Tuesday afternoon on the west side of the state Capitol before a fired-up crowd of Democrats and Denver movers and shakers.
“I love Colorado every bit as much as I love Denver,” he said.
Hickenlooper quickly stressed that he knows more about Colorado than metro Denver, having worked statewide as a geologist in the 1980s. He lost his job when the oil industry tanked and then opened up a brewpub downtown when the area was known as Skid Row, not LoDo.

Hick would be better off staying out of this one. He would inherit a state economy no better off than the economy Obama inherited. Joblessness, a multi-billion dollar budget deficit, and a hostile population are not the outline of a successful governorship. He could do as the Obama administration does and blame it on the last guy, but he’d be blaming it on his own party. One thing Hick could do which would help to right the ship would be to change the playing field for the state’s handling of their share of royalties. Instead of spending it as fast as it comes in, he could begin to hold some back and transition to a system more like WY or NM. In the era of sustainability projects, this would be a useful pursuit.
