The two utilities seeking to build a transmission line over La Veta Pass from the San Luis Valley defended the proposal Friday against criticisms that it was too costly and unnecessary.
Spokesmen for the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and Xcel Energy reiterated during a meeting with The Chieftain’s editorial board that the $90 million, 95-mile line was the best way to improve service reliability and export renewable energy
from Southern Colorado.
The utilities were responding specifically to a report from the Trinchera Ranch filed at the end of last month with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
That report offered a series of alternatives that its consultant claimed would cost tens of millions of dollars less, while sparing scenic La Veta Pass and the 172,000-acre ranch owned by billionaire hedge fund manager Louis Bacon. The report does not challenge the segment of the line that would run from Comanche to Walsenburg.
