Solar Boosts Xcel’s Renewables Portfolio

DENVER - Xcel Energy Inc. said it has added more than 257 megawatts of solar power to its plan for meeting the state’s renewable energy standard by 2020.
The utility filed its plan with the state PUC this past Tuesday. The solar energy will be generated by a program in which Xcel purchases renewable energy credits from customers who isntall solar power systems.
Colorado state law requires that 20 percent of the utility’s energy be generated by renewable resources by 2020. The power provider’s plan also includes about 700 megawatts of new wind power as well as roughly 350 megawatts of utility-scale solar power plants.
Xcel won praise from Gov. Ritter because it is adding more than three times the amount of solar photovoltaic resources than that required by.
