DENVER - Xcel Energy is doubling rebates for its natural gas customers who purchase and install insulation between Sept. 1, 2009 and Oct. 15, 2009. The program includes insulation for attics and walls, as well as air sealing and weather-stripping.

“The Department of Energy reports that 50 percent to 70 percent of the energy used in the average home is tied to heating and cooling,” said Xcel Energy Program Manager Crystal Manik. “Having a properly insulated home benefits our customers during the cold winter months, but also helps them reduce high energy usage in the summer months. Insulation is an important part of any home energy plan.”

Xcel offers standard rebates of 20 percent throughout the year on insulation installs, with a maximum rebate of $300. This offer doubles the rebate amount with a maximum payback of $600. Homeowners can use any contractor they choose for the installation.

Participants must be residential, natural gas customers in Colorado. Eligible installs include attic insulation and bypass sealing, wall insulation and air sealing, and weather stripping. Installers must be qualified contractors who are fully insured and residents cannot install the insulation themselves. Rebate forms must be received by Nov. 15, 2009.

Another rebate tailored to summer cooling efficiency also is available. Colorado customers who purchase and install a 13-SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) air conditioning unit or air source heat pump between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15 through one of Xcel Energy’s registered cooling contractors are eligible for a $50 rebate. Usually, rebates are only offered for 14.5 SEER rating or higher. Xcel Energy must approve the application in order to receive the cash rebate.

The programs are part of the company’s overall efficiency effort to help customers save energy and money and subsequently reduce demand. For more information on Xcel Energy’s new and existing energy efficiency programs, go to www.xcelenergy.com.
