Pending FERC approval, a new 200-megawatt natural-gas fired power plant in Southeastern Colorado will be built by Black Hills Corp, with completion expected by the start of 2012.
Black Hills Colorado IPP, a subsidiary of Rapid City, S.D.-based Black Hills Corp., will construct the facility which will provide power to Black Hills Energy-Colorado Electric, a utility subsidiary of Black Hills, for distribution to about 93,300 of the utility’s customers in the Pueblo-Canon City-Rocky Ford area.
The company is still deciding on the site for the plant, and the eventual location will affect the estimated $240 million to $265 million total cost.
Black Hills says the plant will consist of two 100-MW units, each with two 40-MW LM6000 natural gas-fired combustion turbines and one 20-MW steam turbine, operated in a combined cycle mode.
Black Hills Corp. (NYSE: BKH) has a corporate office in Golden. Its utility division produces power for nearly 760,000 natural gas and electric customers in Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Montana, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
