A state grant program has provided a ray of light for local solar installers.
The program, run by Gov. Bill Ritter’s office, distributed $155,193 in rebates in La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and Montezuma counties. Homeowners were able to get rebates to install solar water-heating systems in their homes.
Fifty-seven area homes participated in the program, which began with a pilot effort in 2008 and ended June 30. Derek Wadsworth, owner of SolarWorks! Renewable Energy Solutions, a Durango company, said the program increased his business by about 60 percent last year.
“With this increase, we were able to hire three more employees and keep money flowing through our local economy while helping the environment,” he said in a news release.
The rebate funds were provided by the Four Corners Office for Research Efficiency, or 4CORE; Empire Electric Association of Cortez, the city of Cortez and the Governor’s Energy Office rebate program.
4CORE and other groups hope it is renewed. “We’re anxiously awaiting any information,” said Theresa Steely, 4CORE’s program manager.
The governor’s Web site says to expect an expanded version of the program because of federal stimulus funds.
Local groups touted the program’s benefits.
“In addition to creating jobs, solar thermal installations decrease utility bills, reduce energy consumption, contribute to the Climate and Energy Action Plan carbon-reduction goals and increase Colorado’s energy independence,” said Aileen Tracy, executive director of 4CORE.
The systems’ installation will prevent the release of an estimated 139 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year, the equivalent of taking 63 cars off the road or planting 12,269 trees.
