Arch Coal Building Colorado Plant to
Remove Impurities
Reported by Staff
Arch Coal has announced plans to construct a plant at its West Elk Mine in Somerset designed to remove impurities that, according to the company, have contributed to a production slowdown and layoffs.
Arch says it hopes to have the $25 million to $30 million facility up and running by the middle of next year.
Kim Link, a spokesperson for the major coal producer, says there are, in fact, uses for coal with impurities, but demand is weaker because of the recession. Once the plant is in operational mode, Arch can decide whether to clean its coal based on market conditions.
Because of decreased demand, Arch laid off approximately 60 employee miners and 40 contract miners at West Elk earlier this year.
