Cleantech VC Investment Jumps in Q2 —
Colorado Firms in Top 5 of New Energy Deals

Boulder-based Tendril, a manufacture of smart grid software, received $30 million in funding; and alternative fuels producer, Gevo in Englewood, was the recipient of $40 million. The deals put both start-ups in the top five reported venture-capital funding transactions nationwide for clean energy in the second quarter.

Vestas Closes British Wind Plant, Expands to Colorado

Vestas will move its operation to Colorado because the U.S. market is much bigger and more vibrant – and will go head to head with General Electric and Mitsubishi to take advantage of Barack Obama’s program to subsidize wind farms as well as state-based utility clean energy mandates.

In the Oil Patch, Optimism Takes Hold

Oil and gas drilling in the U.S. has begun the crawl slowly out of the hole it fell into over the last year. With the Dow Jones index struggling above 9000, the housing market showing signs of recovery, and oil prices creeping upward, the rig count by energy industry Baker Hughes Inc. hit 943 last week.

Solix Biofuels Flips Switch on Production Facility
at Coyote Gulch

The spin-off from CSU uses algae to produce liquid fuel for use in airplanes and diesel trucks. Its Coyote Gulch Demonstration Facility near Durango is expected to be producing the equivalent of 3,000 gallons per acre, per year of algal oil by late 2009.
