WASHINGTON, D.C. - The latest data from the American Wind Energy Association ranks Colorado eighth in the nation for wind power generation.

The state had 1,068 megawatts of wind power generating capacity installed as of the end of the first quarter, according to AWEA. The report also shows that Colorado has no wind power projects currently under construction. Texas leads the nation for existing capacity at 7,907 megawatts with 1,102 megawatts under construction. Other top states include:

  • Iowa with 2,883 megawatts installed and 210 under construction;
  • California with 2,653 megawatts installed and 125 under construction;
  • Minnesota with 1,803 megawatts installed and none under construction;
  • Washington with 1,479 megawatts installed and none under construction;
  • Oregon with 1,363 megawatts installed and 126 under construction;
  • New York with 1,261 megawatts installed and 21 under construction.

During the first quarter, 2,800 megawatts of new generating capacity was installed throughout the nation, with new projects going online in 15 states. Total wind power generating capacity in the United States is around 28,000 megawatts.

“These brand-new wind projects shine a ray of hope on our economy today, creating good jobs and powering homes with a clean, inexhaustible source of energy,” said AWEA CEO Denise Bode in a prepared statement. “But the nation still lacks the long-term signal that is needed to build up renewable energy on large scale.”
