San Luis Valley Taking Stock of Renewables

SAGUACHE — Harnessing the power of the sun has been in practice for centuries and is used daily from children concentrating the sun’s beams through glass to immolate insects on a sidewalk to leaving curtains open on a sunny day to warm up a house.

As the solar industry becomes more of a presence in the San Luis Valley, concerns about transmission, economics, laws, standards, placement of facilities and effectiveness have risen. Saguache County Community Center filled up quickly last Thursday morning as citizens, stakeholders, and community
leaders shuffled in to discuss the future of the San Luis Valley and the renewable energy industry.

Led by Ceal Smith, director of the San Luis Valley Water Protection Coalition, the meeting surrounded three large questions: What’s coming and when, how will solar development impact the San Luis Valley, and how can stakeholders, decision makers and citizens ensure a sustainable energy future that benefits the Valley?

Smith said, as far as the SLV Water Protection Coalition was concerned, “we need to move away from destructive fossil fuel dependency…[and] make a rapid transition to a renewable energy economy.”
