Brian Underwood
Letter of Introduction
After 21 years working for Colorado Springs Utilities at Martin Drake Power Plant, I recently retired and am planning a new career in the field of sustainability services. My career as an operations supervisor and power plant operator prepared me well for work in sustainable technologies and photovoltaic electric generation. I know about efficiency and conservation.
My lifestyle, interests and training fit well with sustainability practices. I am a recycler. My family conserves on water, electricity and natural gas. We line-dry our laundry and use compact fluorescent bulbs. We have installed thermal windows on our home and we have xeriscaped our yard. My family enjoys bird watching and I am a fisherman–we are lovers of nature.
I recently completed an online course, “On Becoming a Sustainability Coordinator,” through the University of Colorado-Boulder. I have also completed Siemens video-based training on “Basic Photovoltaic Design.”
I have a small personal photovoltaic system which is used to power my home office: a computer, printer and lighting. I wrote a proposal for Colorado Springs Utilities titled “Sustained Solar Development Project” and was a member of the utilities’ Renewable Energy Committee. Home Power Magazine printed my article, Sun and Shakespeare (HP #89), about my personal PV power system. I also self-published a chapbook titled, “Mr. Green Jeans Guide to Sustainable Living.”
I know how to manage energy and energy systems in a safe, efficient and sustainable way. I am a good leader and I can communicate a sustainable philosophy.
As I begin this new chapter of my life, my wife Diane and I will soon be returning to Alamosa, Colorado. I would very much like to work in a sustainability enterprise or with clean energy. I feel with a little practical training I could expand my skills in a number of related occupations including PV salesman/designer, sustainability coordinator, technical writer, public relations and safety/training professional. I know that I could lead a hard-working field team in safely building sustainable energy systems or in home weatherization and lighting efficiency upgrades.
My wife and son are the most important things in my life, but making electric power for the city of Colorado Springs has been second in importance. Now I want to work for the larger San Luis Valley community in its new solar and sustainable future.

The Career History of Brian Underwood
I worked at Colorado Springs Utilities for 21 years. I began my career there in August of 1989 as a utility man in operations at a three-unit coal-fired power plant. I processed through promotions to Boiler Turbine Operator and Control Room Operator, with the last five years as a Shift Supervisor. I retired on June 30, 2010.
The most important aspect of my position as shift supervisor was leading a solid group of men and women and to ensure that the units were operated in a safe, clean and economical manner. I worked hard during my time with CSU to fulfill those objectives. I was an “Exceeds Expectations” employee at Martin Drake Power Plant and I was rated “Far Exceeds Expectations” in leadership competency on my most recent evaluation.
Achievements at Colorado Springs Utilities:
• Updated and rewrote Boiler Turbine Operator Training write-ups, qualifications and tests.
• Worked as plant operation liaison to the Y2K millennium computer security committee.
• Chairman of the “Issues 97” Committee.
• Member of Colorado Springs Utilities Renewable Energy Committee.
• Served on several hiring and promotion boards and corrective action panels.
I graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo, Colorado, after which I served in the United States Navy as Petty Officer Third Class Machinist Mate. As a younger man I worked several jobs including newspaper pressman, newspaper reporter, weather balloon wrangler and shipyard marine mechanic.
I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and a minor in journalism from Adams State College, Alamosa, Colorado.
I have a lovely wife and a good son. I am a fisherman and birdwatcher.
